Ama Dablam Expedition

Trip
Overview

Ama Dablam which translates in the Nepali language as “Mother’s necklace” is aptly named for the impressive glacier on the Southwest face that resembles a jewel box hanging on the neck of the magnificent mountain. Standing at 6812 metres, the ice-coated granite pyramid of Ama Dablam is a dominant landmark that literally follows you along the popular trail to Everest Base Camp. Fortunately, the ‘Matterhorn of the Himalaya’ which is considered sacred by Nepalese has now been opened up to enthusiasts to appreciate it up close!

Trip
Highlights

We make our ascent to Ama Dablam via the South-Western Ridge, which has become the standard route since the UK /USA/ NZ team first scaled it in 1961. A major highlight of this route is its varied yet sustained climb that involves a reasonable level of difficulty. Our journey takes in three high camps set up at strategic points to ensure safe acclimatisation procedures. We start with a moderate (warm up) climb to Camp 1, followed by a challenging narrow granite ridge where we must negotiate pitches of steep ice and snow slopes. From Camp 2 our route requires more technical climbing skills as we make our way up to Camp 3 and encounter the precarious hanging glacier ('Dablam' or necklace), cross a sharp ridge (snow arete) and crevasse (bergschrund) set between ice cliffs en-route to the summit. Ama Dablam expedition is a challenging technical climb that offers experienced mountaineers the chance to test themselves against the elements. Ama Dablam will provide the seasoned professional with an adrenaline rush like no other. If all of this is not enough, imagine the unforgettable image of being in the thick of the Himalayas with a 360 degree panorama of Everest, Lhotse, Island Peak, Makalu and many other snow-capped massifs! At Down to Earth Adventure we take your safety very seriously... Our Ama Dablam Expedition team are highly experienced and include specialist mountaineers, guides and support staff to ensure your peace of mind. We are well-equipped to deal with the challenging conditions of a route marked by snow, ice and rock climbing. Finally, it wouldn't be a Down to Earth Adventure if we didn't showcase the amazing warmth and hospitality of the Sherpa people with whom we have the privilege of sharing this amazing part of the world with. A simply amazing and unforgettable experience.
