Community Development Health Projects
Down to Earth Adventure is humbled to be in a position to also help coordinate much needed community development projects in health promotion and health care. From our initial efforts to provide basic shelter, first aid, food supplies, sanitation as well as logistics to bring in health professionals to treat earthquake survivors in Dolakha and Sindhupalchowk in May 2015, we have been able to increase our capacity to support locals.
Following our early emergency relief efforts, we wanted to work with a range of partners so as to more strategically utilize our strengths in logistics to provide more sustainable community development projects for locals. Our vision was to be able to draw on the actual needs of the community to help facilitate action. We have been fortunate to be able to partner with organization such as Ayuda Directa Himalaya, Multiopticas Fundacion and Spanish Red Cross to enhance our footprint and provide essential health care services to villagers in need.
In 2016, Down to Earth Adventure provided the logistics and project management expertise to enable Multiopticas Fundacion and Ayuda Directa Himalaya to work alongside Nepalese health care professionals to offer free optical and general health clinics across Dolakha and Gorkha regions. Four Spanish optometrists joined forces with Nepalese health professionals to treat 1100 in Dolakha and 2000 patients in Gorkha.
In October 2017, after the success of our first campaign, we strengthened our capacity to deliver health care initiatives by partnering with Spanish Red Cross and their network of volunteers working on the ground in Nepal. This time, Nuwakot District was chosen and over 3200 people were treated by the specialist optical and health care teams over 10 days.
The initiative has become an annual event and much planning is going into place to choose a range of remote locations that are cut off from services. We hope to expand the project so as to benefit as many villagers as possible.
