Gokyo Lakes are the world’s highest freshwater lake system and feature a system of19 lakes that are located between 4700m and 5000m in the Sagarmatha National Park. Fed by Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in Nepal Himalaya, and a stream running from Renjo La Pass, the six largest lakes sit like a string of serene turquoise gems and form the highlight of this spectacular trek. Considered sacred by Hindus and Buddhists, Gokyo Lakes have long held important religious value by the many pilgrims who visit each year. This trek offers the unique combination of off-the-beaten-track wilderness with breathtaking panoramic views of Everest, Makalu (8481m), Cho Oyu (8153m), Lhotse (8516m), Nuptse (7861m) and Gychung Kang (7922m). This trek will bring you in contact with the vibrant hospitality of the Sherpa who farm yak herds in the high alpine pastures of Machhermo and Luza; and experience the warmth and liveliness of the riverside village of Phortse and Dole. This trek is truly amazing and is an ideal choice for the avid photographer who wants to capture the mind-blowing contrasts in scenery of the Dudh Khosi valley in only 12 days!
These treks typically require you to do 6-7 hours each day over steep hilly terrain on usually rough trails but with no real extremes of weather. Treks in this category can include trekking to elevations of up to 5500m with daily ascends of around 400-700m.When trekking at higher altitudes, your body needs to adjust to lower levels of oxygen and this provides added physical challenge to the trek. It is important to be physically fit and to prepare your body by doing regular exercise prior to embarking on your trek. Previous hiking or camping experience is preferable.
