This trek offers one of the most diverse and off the beaten track experiences. Covering the distance between the majestic Phoksundo and Rara lakes along the ancient Tibetan salt caravan route will provide intrigue and challenge. If your goal is to get away from it all and soak up the traditional Tibetan culture of some of the most remote villages reached only by conquering a number of high 5000m+ passes, then this is the ultimate escape for you. The changing scenery comprising glacial streams, alpine meadows, wildflowers against a backdrop of snowcapped mountain ranges. Heading west on a trail seldom traversed will bring you back to nature and offer you the ultimate way to experience traditional Tibetan culture and hospitality. Completing a ‘kora’, pilgrim’s circle, around the famous Shey Gompa and nearby Crystal Mountain will top off an amazing adventure!
Difficult treks involve you walking for at least 6-8 hours or more each day. You can expect to cross steep hilly terrain and occasional high passes with daily ascends and descends of around 500-1000m. These trails take you to remote environments with high altitude and extreme weather likely. Only basic facilities are available on some nights. Previous trekking experience, physical fitness and positive attitude are therefore essential.
