The “Snow Leopard” is one of the most stunning endangered big cats found in this Himalayan region. Sightings of this amazing yet shy creature are the stuff of legends. Surviving on prey like blue sheep, jharal, marmot, musk deer and so on, that are declining due to destruction of viable ecosystems, the snow leopard is quickly growing endangered. In order to glimpse this illusive creature it is necessary to travel to the heart of the remote upper Dolpo region. Besides the chance to see the snow leopard, this trek will provide an excellent introduction to the untouched, traditional culture, religion and lifestyles of some of the remote people on the planet. Visiting the famed monasteries of Shey Gompa and the lesser known Shyamling Gompa adds an interesting glimpse into the rich history of the area as well as cleansing your soul and reinvigorating your mind. Time to explore the majestic turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake contrasted with surrounding tropical vegetation is pure therapy. This trek is the ultimate in off the beaten track adventures in the remote Western Nepal region of Dolpo that will bring you into contact with the native habitats of the snow leopard.
Difficult treks involve you walking for at least 6-8 hours or more each day. You can expect to cross steep hilly terrain and occasional high passes with daily ascends and descends of around 500-1000m. These trails take you to remote environments with high altitude and extreme weather likely. Only basic facilities are available on some nights. Previous trekking experience, physical fitness and positive attitude are therefore essential.
